Welcome to the fourth installment of Unity Arts Festival!

Unity Film Screening

11th & 12th September | 11am-4pm
Trinity Art Gallery - London City Island

Don’t miss this opportunity to see the as yet unreleased film before it goes on The Film Festival Tour. Tim Allen, the animator behind Mr Fox and Isle of Dogs, is screening his animated film that was created in Unity’s 2020 arts festival at London City Island.

Created at London City Island, the film uses the intriguing method of 'pixilation' - animating people frame by frame by capturing thousands of photographs.

With a cast made of London City Island residents with no prior experience of animation, this film is a truly collaborative and often spontaneous process guided by director & animator Tim Allen. Edit and cinematography by filmmaker Paul Mortimore, produced by Ian Felton, this is the story of the community that came together to tell their tales of separation and unity.

Dock Lands People

11th & 12th September | 11am-4pm
Trinity Art Gallery - London City Island

DOCK LANDS PEOPLE is a series of events centred around a photographic essay by Michele Turriani and produced and coordinated by Trinity Art Gallery. The photographs document the Royal Docks' architectural heritage and their intangible history, as found in the surviving original communities. These communities consist of people that worked at the docks and spent most of their lives in their immediate proximity.

We provide a suitable platform where the voices of docklands' diverse communities can be heard and their presence acknowledged and appreciated. This project in part is geared towards introducing a new community to their own history and an old community to today's history in the making.

Our aim is to encourage people of the docks to pause for a moment and consider the wealth and depth of heritage within the location where they live and work. We hope this project will promote greater appreciation for the Royal Docks' history and regeneration. We'd like to inspire the local community to consider their active involvement in shaping the future of the docks.

software for less

11th & 12th September | Sat 11am-6pm, Sun 11am-3pm
arebyte Gallery - London City Island

arebyte Gallery presents Software for Less, an exhibition examining the cultural, social and political effects of software on contemporary society, by US artist Ben Grosser.

Software for Less will take visitors on a journey through a pseudo tech exposition. Each work is presented as a product that could have come out of an alternative Silicon Valley, interrogating and reimagining how software is created, operated, and sold. The exhibition provokes the viewer to consider the influence software has on us, foregrounding social media platforms as the main impetus; how is an interface that foregrounds our friend count changing our conceptions of friendship? Who benefits when a software system can intuit how we feel? Ultimately, questioning how software moulds who we are.

BIRD

11th & 12th September | Sat 11am-8pm, Sun 12am-8pm
London Lighthouse Gallery & Studio

Starting from the moment Annabel found a dead bird in a disused fireplace, this exhibition explores the history we find imprinted on all objects and beings. From an immediate response captured with oil paint on an old floorboard, the artist continued to create. With poetry, print, paint and sculpture becoming a sort of resurrection in memory which brought the bird to life. In this exhibition the fragility of life is certain but the inspiration in memory is a sure resolution.

Cartografie

11th & 12th September | 11am-4pm

London City Island

Our story begins with a joint purpose: two families drawn together by our shared passion for beautiful ingredients, design and experiences. We pair this passion with our desire to change the chocolate industry for good. One bite at a time.

As such, day in the life at Cartografie is a delectable one. Our filled chocolates are celebratory expressions of particular regions, couvertures and cocoa bean varieties. Origin shapes originality. So that these nuances shine, preparation and process are meticulous matters. Kae Shibata constantly tastes and tests each couverture to ensure it ages with a full flavour profile. When it’s at peak perfection, it’s time to create our ganaches and fillings. Her devotion to her craft from ageing the chocolate, to tempering, filling, hand-shaping, dipping and packaging each piece is a labour (and flavour) of love.
